Become a Leader

How to become a spiritual leader in your community.

Are you interested in Swedenborg?
Connected with the New Church but don’t have a church in your area?

Starting a spiritual gathering is a great way to get your family, friends and community to create a ritual together. Find ways to support each other’s journey and serve your local community!

How it works

  • Prepare

Complete a 3 hour online orientation focused in the art of convening a spiritual group.

  • Call on your tribe

Invite your family and friends to join and co-create this experience in an inclusive way. Set up a time and place.

  • Gather

Once a week (or the frequency that works for your group) to connect with God in meaningful ways inspired by your spiritual journey.

  • Serve

Plan at least 4 community outreach projects every year. We’ll offer some ideas, but you can also come up with your own as a group.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Swedenborg and The New Church?2019-10-04T00:42:36+00:00

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was a scientist, inventor, and theologian. His theological writings, which fill over 30 large volumes, uncover a deeper, spiritual meaning in the Bible’s literal stories. His teachings reject the notion of faith alone, while offering a framework for living that emphasizes love and wisdom in action.

The New Church is a small denomination of Christianity that uses Swedenborgian spirituality as a basis for understanding the Word, ourselves, and our world. To learn more, visit https://newchurch.org/get-involved/learn-about-the-new-church/

What can I expect in a Spiritual Group gathering?2019-10-03T21:04:59+00:00

Because these groups are about human connection, Spiritual Group gatherings are as individual as the people in them, with common themes throughout. The main focus is coming together in community and spending time nurturing your relationships with each other and with God.

Each group has a host or facilitator who helps ensure that each gathering goes as smoothly as possible and feels safe for all involved. Gatherings generally consist of reading passages from Scripture, sharing thoughts and questions, praying together, and identifying actions can positively impact you, your group, and others in your life.

How old do I need to be to lead or join?2019-10-03T21:05:57+00:00

Participants need to be at least 16 years old, but children can participate with their parents in some groups.

How long are the Spiritual Group gatherings?2019-10-03T21:03:00+00:00

We suggest a 90 minute meeting, but your group may adjust the time to meet its needs and schedule.

How big will my group be?2019-10-03T21:05:35+00:00

Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there among them.” (Matthew 18:20). So if you have one or two friends, that is enough to begin building a community. Groups of about 5-8 allow for vibrant discussion. Groups that grow beyond 10-12 people can subdivide to allow time for genuine connection.

“Love for community is a fuller form of love for our neighbor”
